The state of Nebraska became the 36th state to ratify the 18th Amendment, with a three-fourth majority vote, making Prohibition an effective law one year from this date. Rum-running, the organized smuggling of importing rum and other liquor by sea and over land to the United States, became a highly profitable business once Prohibition took effect in 1920. During the 17th century, Jamaica was the largest sugar producing island in the Caribbean. The sugar and rum industry have always been tightly linked. The island gives home to some of the most iconic Rum distilleries of the Caribbean. Jamaican Rum producers are famous for creating fruity Rum types.
